History

1918

  • Company is founded by Kinnosuke Sakai with the aim of manufacturing and repairing parts for automobiles, internal combustion engines and steam locomotives.

1927

  • Production of locomotives begins.

1929

  • With the expansion in scale of civil engineering works in Japan, the company starts producing road rollers. Continued capital investment driven by increasing demand leads to a dramatic growth in business.

1935

  • Overseas business is initiated with the export of road rollers to Thailand.

1945

  • Head office and most of main plant destroyed in air raids.

1946

  • Former President Tomoyoshi Sakai begins reconstruction of the plant with the aim of recovery.

1949

  • Company is incorporated to establish SAKAI WORKS Co.,Ltd. (2 million yen capital).

1950

  • Business expands gradually from 1950 domestically, as well as internationally, and exports to the Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan begin.

1956

  • Manufacturing of vibrating rollers (SR1) and Stabilizer (PM103) begins.

1959

  • Manufacturing of static pneumatic tired rollers (TR41) begins.

1967

  • Company renamed SAKAI HEAVY INDUSTRIES, LTD.
  • Manufacturing of locomotives ceased due to decreased demand following the shift in the Forestry Agency policy to truck lumber by road.

1968

  • Static three wheel roller developed with hydrostatic drive, equal drum size and equal linear pressure (R1).

1970

  • Joint venture, PT. SAKAI SAKTI, established in Jakarta, Indonesia to assemble and repair road rollers.

1972

  • SAKAI ENGINEERING established (name changed to SAKAI CRANE CORP. in December 1980, and later to SAKAI KIKO in May 1995).
  • Hydrostatic drive wheel mounted road planer (ER160) developed.

1976

  • SAKAI AMERICA, INC. established in Delaware, U.S.A. for the purpose of importing/exporting and selling construction equipment.

1977

  • Vibratory single drum roller (SV90) for heavy duty earthworks developed.

1979

  • All-wheel-drive, all-wheel-vibratory tandem roller (SW70) developed.
  • Vibratory plate compactor (PC7) developed.

1981

  • Listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

1982

  • Tamper (VT6) developed.
  • Asphalt compaction control system (RECOM) developed.

1983

  • Preheater (PH300) and repaver-remixer (RM1000) for on-site asphalt pavement recycling developed.

1990

  • Vertical vibratory roller (SD450) developed (awarded the "Certificate of Construction Technology Developed in the Private Sector" by the former Ministry of Construction, now MLIT).

1995

  • Ichiro Sakai, promoted to President.
  • PT. SAKAI INDONESIA established in Bekasi, Indonesia for the purpose of manufacturing and selling light construction equipment and related parts.
  • Asphalt paver (PT310) developed.

1996

  • ISO 9001 certification acquired, meeting international standards for quality assurance stipulated by the International Organization for Standardization.
  • Test building with a soil compaction test pit constructed within Technical Development Division.

2000

  • The subsidiary, SAKAI AMERICA MANUFACTURING, Inc., is established in Georgia, USA for the purpose of manufacturing and selling construction equipment and related parts.
  • PT. SAKAI INDONESIA expanded for the purpose of manufacturing and selling heavy construction equipment.

2003

  • The subsidiary, SAKAI INDUSTRIES (SHANGHAI), LTD. is established in Shanghai, China for the purpose of manufacturing and selling construction equipment.

2004

  • World's first vibratory pneumatic tired roller (GW750) developed.

2009

  • World's first vibratory three wheel roller with a vibration mechanism (MW700) is registered on NETIS (system for promoting the use of new technologies in, e.g., public works) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
  • Stabilizer (PM550) developed.

2012

  • Vibratory single drum rollers (SV520/620) developed with the aim of cultivating the global market.

2014

  • New joint office integrating development and production constructed at the Production Center. Engaging in development.

2017

  • PT. SAKAI SALES AND SERVICES ASIA is established in Bekasi, Indonesia for the purpose of sales and services for construction equipment and related parts.

2018

  • Compary celebrated its 100th anniversary on May 1.
  • TZ704 Guardman, the first roller equipped with an automatic emergency brake system, was developed.

2019

  • The operation in Indonesia was strengthened through the closer cooperation of the three subsidiaries including SI. SI and SRMI factories were integrated into one larger factory in the newly acquired site.

2022

  • Listed on the prime market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

2023

  • The head office was moved with the aim of pursuing a more comfortable work environment, stimulating communication and streamlining operations.

2024

  • Sighed a family partner agreement with Urawa reds.
  • Product 3-wheel roller R1 (production started in 1968) recognized as "Mechanical enginnering heritage (No.123)" in 2024 by the japan society of mechanical engineers.
  • Production of ER555F-s road planer and PM550-s stabilizer transferred to PT. SAKAI INDONESIA.
